Kathmandu, Sept 7: The scale of Nepal’s Bhotekoshi flood disaster continues to emerge, with 1,353 bodies recovered so far and 3,992 people still unaccounted for, according to the latest figures released by Nepal Police. Of the recovered bodies, 530 are men, and 328 are women, while 495 have yet to be identified. The large number of unidentified victims has added another difficult task to an already extensive recovery operation, as authorities work to match the dead with families searching for missing relatives. Nepal Police Central Spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle said 3,394 Nepali nationals remain unaccounted for, including 2,827 men and 567 women. The missing also include 506 foreign nationals, comprising 267 men and 239 women. Search and rescue teams from the Nepal Police, Nepali Army and Armed Police Force remain deployed across the flood-affected areas. Their work now extends beyond rescuing survivors to searching through debris, recovering bodies and helping authorities establish the identities of those killed. Police said 1,044 recovered bodies have already been buried. Efforts continue to identify and properly manage the remaining bodies, many of which were recovered from areas heavily damaged by the August 26 flood. The disaster has left thousands of families facing prolonged uncertainty. A total of 9,159 people have been rescued so far, while 3,190 rescued survivors are currently staying at holding centres, according to Kafle. Authorities have turned to DNA testing as the main method for identifying victims whose remains cannot be established through conventional means. Police have collected DNA samples from 1,181 deceased people and 1,195 relatives of missing persons, bringing the total number of samples collected to 2,376. The Bhotekoshi flood caused widespread destruction along the river corridor, damaging settlements, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure. With thousands still missing, the search and identification effort is expected to remain a major challenge in the days ahead.
