Prajatantra Diwas also known as democracy day is celebrated in Nepal to commemorate the overthrow of the autocratic Rana Regime. This day marks the establishment of Democracy in Nepal. It has been celebrated on Falgun 7 every year since 2007 BS. Every Nepali citizen across the country celebrates this day. This day honors the sacrifice of martyrs and marks the journey of Nepal towards a federal, democratic and republican system. This day marked the end of 104 years of the Ranas during the time of King Tribhuwan Bir Bikram Shah.
It is celebrated by everyone across the whole nation. Different NRNs, patriotic clubs and the Nepalese embassy celebrate in foreign countries. There is an official holiday in Nepal on this day. People organize rallies, programs, social and patriotic works for the country. Huge numbers of people involve themselves on this day.
Prajatantra in Nepal was started when the Rana regime was removed from Nepal. It was done with a three-party agreement between the Rana government, Nepali Congress and King Tribhuwan at Delhi, Indian Falgun 1, 2007. After the agreement, King Tribhuwan returned to Nepal on Falgun 4, 2007 and declared Nepal a democratic national Falgun 7, 2007. The new constitution of Nepal was made for the citizens. An interim government was formed, including 5 Ranas and 5 Nepali Congress members. King Tribhuwan regained all his lost powers from Rana and became a powerful man of Nepal.
The Nepalese community and all over Nepal celebrate this day with different rallies, programs and activities that reflect patriotism and show the feeling of unity. The feeling of Nationalism is also expressed in various forms such as dance, song, poems, speech etc. The love towards the nation is shown by attending different programs on this day. The programs are done for the sake of the nation.
Different programs are organized at Tudikhel by the Nepal Army, which involves the president, prime minister and high officials of the country. Youths of the country participate in bike rallies with the flag of Nepal which signifies the patriotic nature in younger generations. The national flag is saluted as a symbol of tribute to the nation. People share warm wishes with each other on this day remembering the contributions of people and pay tribute to the martyrs.
Prajatantra Diwas gives strong community bonding by showing unity among all the citizens of the country. This historical achievement shows one of the most important changes in Nepalese history. This day is a symbol of unity, patriotic nature and the reformation of the country. This day is taught to the students at the school level too. The younger generations are given the knowledge of this day that has taken us to modern Nepal. Similarly, Ganatantra Diwas, Loktantra Diwas and Sambhidhan Diwas are celebrated in Nepal with national pride, a feeling of unity and a patriotic nature which mark the important changes in the political situation of the country.
