Prithvi Jayanti is a significant day in Nepal, celebrated to honor the birth anniversary of Prithvi Narayan Shah, who is the founder of Modern Nepal. Born on Poush 27, 1779 BS, he played a vital role in the unification campaign of Nepal to unite the small and scattered Baise and Chaubise states in the 18th Century. History on Unification of Nepal

Prithvi Narayan Shah was born in the royal palace of Gorkha as the son of King Narbhupal Shah and Queen Kaushalyawati. Since his early childhood, he had exceptional intelligence and leadership qualities. He became the king of the Gorkha State in 1799 BS and he started his grand vision to unite the scattered kingdoms of the region into one strong nation. 

Over the past, Nepal was divided into many small and scattered Baise Chaubise states fighting among themselves. Prithvi Narayan Shah understood that unity was essential for the survival and existence of the states and peoples. He began the unification campaign to unite the states and make a powerful nation. He conquered Kathmandu Valley in 1825 BS, which marks a major milestone of his mission. He declared Kathmandu Valley as the capital of the nation. By the time of his passing, he had laid the foundation of unified Nepal that let his younger generations to continue and grow the campaign he had initiated.

Significance and importance

Prithvi Narayan Shah is remembered as the architect of the nation who transformed small and scattered states into a unified, single and sovereign nation. His campaign and vision protected Nepal from the colonial powers during a time when many neighbouring countries were falling under foreign control. 

He promoted the unity in diversity of ethnic groups, languages and cultures of Nepal. He treated all the people equally and encouraged them to work together for the nation’s prosperity. His leadership style combined the military strength of the Gorkhas with diplomatic wisdom, making him a true nation builder.

How is Prithvi Jayanti Celebrated?

Prithvi Jayanti is celebrated across Nepal with various programs and activities that honor the memory and the contribution of Prithvi Narayan Shah. Mainly, the celebration takes place infront of Sigha Durbar and his  birthplace in Gorkha.

  • Honored by the high officials of the country

Government officials, Political Leaders, the Prime Minister, the presidents and the citizens gather to pay tribute by offering flowers and garlands at the statues of Prithvi Narayan Shah. Special ceremonies are organized where people remember his achievements. Nepal Army organizes a special program at the statue on the west gate of Singha Durbar.
